Petit mal seizure Treatment| Approaching Towards Intelligent Use Of Anticonvulsant Drugs

Posted on January 20, 2012

Anticonvulsant drugs are given to the patient having seizure but this is only the one part of the seizure treatment. If patient gets a control on the seizure it is considered as a big success in terms of the treatment. Anticonvulsant drugs help control the frequency of the seizure attaches. However, they are not considered as a sure cure for epilepsy. Anticonvulsant drugs only alter cerebral cortex activity that ultimately reduces the frequency of the seizure occurrence. They show a very little effect on the physico-chemical disturbance that is considered a major reason behind the seizures.

Researches Are Being Done To Control Seizure Attaches

These days various new drugs are being tested in various laboratories throughout the nations. And direct result of these new researches has been positive till now. More and more effective treatment methods have been introduced in recent times to prevent seizure attaches. However, for the ultimate control over seizure attaches, we still need to look for the treatment that could possibly work upon the chemical compounds that inhibit seizures. The medical therapists need to emphasis more on the fundamental physiology of the problem.

Methods To Classify Seizure For Better Use Of Anticonvulsant Drugs

To intelligently use anticonvulsant drugs over seizure problem, one need to be sure on the type of the seizure the patient is affected with. There are three popular ways of classifying patients with epilepsy. By knowing the presence and absence of organic lesion the seizure patients can be divided in to two groups, the symptomatic and idiopathic seizure patient. This method emphasizes on the need of a thorough analysis of each case before starting a treatment. By the use of electroencephalography (the study that read the electrical activity of the brain) we can very well see that there is some disturbance of the cortical activity at the time of seizure attack in the patient. These disturbances are also found in between the seizures.

The second method is based on the electroencephalographic study which reveals the particular area of the cerebrum that initiates abnormal discharge. The method is a great help to the surgeon that approaches towards seizure treatment from a surgical view point. Other than surgeons’ this is also beneficial to the clinicians to choose particular treatment method. The third method is a clinical manifestation that also is also beneficial in drug selection for particular seizure.

There Is No Standardized Treatment For Petit Mal Seizure

Petit mal seizures that mostly occur to the children are evident with a transient clouding of consciousness. This happens for a few seconds affecting slightly to the eyes and head with some uncontrolled movements. Postural tone, myoclonic jerks are other transient losses found during petit mal seizure. There is no standardized treatment for all seizure as each patient is present with unique problem. The treatment used to cure grand mal seizures might not be useful to cure petit mal seizures. Hoverers, some generalization have been done based on the drugs, which have been effective in different seizures. Trimethyloxazolidinedione is a drug most preferred for petit mal seizures. Other antiepileptic drugs are still in experimental stage.
